Why are antifreeze coolants and technical fluids colored? A question directly for the manufacturer FLOIXEM

When choosing antifreeze fluids for heating, cooling, and solar systems, clients often ask us: „Why is this liquid blue, pink, or green? Does the color change its antifreeze or protective properties?“

To bring you an accurate answer straight from the source, we asked the experts directly at the FLOIXEM manufacturing plant in Zaragoza, Spain.

Answer straight from Spain: Color has zero effect on performance!

Christian from Floixem confirmed a crucial point:

Pure glycol, dissolved additives, and water are inherently completely clear and colorless. The color does not add any antifreeze capability or anti-corrosion performance to the liquid. However, special dyes are added for two essential practical reasons:

  • Safety and Prevention of Accidental Ingestion (Confusion with drinking water): Although the vast majority of FLOIXEM products are non-toxic, they are still technical chemical products and not drinks. Clear antifreeze in a bottle or pipe could easily be mistaken for plain drinking water. Bright coloring is a primary safety feature.

  • Easy Leakage Detection: If the product were colorless, a leak at fittings or pumps would be very hard to spot. A droplet on the floor could easily be mistaken for condensation or spilled water. Thanks to the dye, installer technicians can spot leaks immediately and identify the source.

FLOIXEM's Unique Approach

While some manufacturers use generic colors across entire product lines, FLOIXEM's strategy is not to repeat colors across its product range. Every product has its own unique color shade, making it much easier for HVAC technicians to identify fluids during maintenance and refilling.

Summary for Practice (Q&A)

Does the color of FLOIXEM antifreeze affect its freezing protection or anti-corrosion performance?
NO. The dye is purely a safety and visual feature that has absolutely no effect on the physical or chemical properties of the fluid.

How should you choose the right antifreeze coolant?
Never choose a fluid based solely on color. Always consult the technical data sheet, the type of glycol used (ethylene glycol vs. propylene glycol), and the required temperature range.
